Which Assessment of Coach-Created Motivational Climate Better Predicts Young Athletes’ Engagement over a Season? Athletes’ Perceptions and Match Observations Do

This work examines athletes’ and coaches’ perceptions observed behavior in training matches of the motivational climate created by coach over course a season whether these sources information can inform engagement young basketball volleyball players. A longitudinal design multilevel mixed-effects linear regression models were conducted. Adolescents (n = 517) both genders (61.1% male, 38.9% female) aged between 12 20 years (M 16.01; SD 1.85) playing division (46.4%) (53.6%) federation Buenos Aires (Argentina) participated study. In addition, 48 coaches (83% 17% female; M age 33.98; 8.39) from teams participated. The videotaped during sessions three waves measurements. Observers used Multidimensional Motivational Climate Observational System. Athletes completed socio-demographic questionnaire, Empowering Disempowering Questionnaire-Coach. also Athlete Engagement Questionnaire. Differences found perspectives and, general, decrease variables characterizing empowering climates an increase those disempowering season. When all measures are considered together effect time is controlled for, assessments that predict athlete match observations.
